River Crossing – when the Serengeti holds its breath
Every year, more than one million wildebeest move through the Serengeti together with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. One of the most spectacular moments of this migration is the crossing of the Mara River – a natural spectacle that fascinates visitors from all over the world..
Whether a crossing will happen at any given moment can never be predicted. Sometimes it happens within a few minutes, while at other times visitors may wait for hours. This uncertainty is exactly what makes the Great Migration so special.
Our route takes us to areas where the chances of witnessing a River Crossing are particularly good, combined with some of the most beautiful landscapes and wildlife areas in northern Tanzania.
The safari is led by a highly experienced and well-trained guide who knows the wildlife and landscapes of northern Tanzania very well. His local knowledge and experience help us make the most of every safari day.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Accommodation: Arusha New Njiro Legacy*
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, we head to Tarangire National Park. On our first game drive, we can expect impressive baobab trees, large elephant herds and, with a little luck, lions. Tarangire has a very different landscape from the Serengeti, making it the perfect start to our safari.
Accommodation: Karatu Hhando Coffee Lodge*
Day 3: From the crater floor to the endless Serengeti
We leave before sunrise for the Ngorongoro Crater. The early morning hours offer excellent conditions for exciting wildlife viewing in one of Africa’s most impressive natural wonders. After our game drive, we leave the highlands behind and continue to Central Serengeti. Along the way, the endless savannah opens up before us and, with a little luck, we may already spot our first lions, cheetahs or hyenas.
Accommodation: Tanzania Bush Camp Central Serengeti*
Day 4: Heading to the Northern Serengeti
Today we leave Central Serengeti and head north through the national park. The landscape changes noticeably as wide open plains give way to rolling savannah and rocky kopjes. In the late afternoon, we reach the Mara region, where the large wildebeest herds gather at this time of year.
Accommodation: Moyo Migration Camp Kogatende*
Day 5 & 6: Two days at the Mara River – time for the special moment
We spend two full days in the Mara region. This extra time makes all the difference because a River Crossing cannot be planned. We observe the herds, follow their movements and patiently wait for the right moment. With a little luck, we may witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River – one of Africa’s most impressive natural spectacles..
Accommodation: Moyo Migration Camp Kogatende*
Day 7: Back to the heart of the Serengeti
Today we leave the Mara region and return to Central Serengeti. There is plenty of time for wildlife viewing along the way before we reach the Seronera area in the evening. With its distinctive granite rocks and kopjes, this diverse landscape is one of the richest wildlife areas in the Serengeti.
Accommodation: Tanzania Bush Camp Central Serengeti*
Day 8: Return to Arusha
After breakfast, we leave the Serengeti. On our way to the park gate, we enjoy more wildlife viewing before crossing the Ngorongoro Highlands and continuing via Karatu to Arusha. In the evening, our shared safari comes to an end with a final overnight stay in Arusha.
Accommodation: Arusha New Njiro Legacy*
Day 9: Farewell or extension
Today it is time to say goodbye. Depending on your flight time, we will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport. If you would like to extend your trip, you could spend a few relaxing days in Moshi or Zanzibar, or add another safari in Mkomazi National Park.
* The accommodations listed reflect the current planning status. Should an accommodation not be available at the time of travel, equivalent alternative accommodation will be provided.
