Safari in Tanzania: How many days are really ideal?

Many travelers ask themselves the same question when planning their safari: How many days should you spend on safari in Tanzania?

The answer naturally depends on several factors:

  • your budget

  • the amount of vacation time you have available

  • your expectations for the safari

  • whether it is your first trip to Africa

But there is one thing I can tell you from experience: Give yourself enough time.

A safari is not a typical holiday where you quickly tick off a list of sights. It is about watching animals, enjoying the landscapes and truly taking in the feeling of the African wilderness.

The typical safari duration: 6–7 days

Many tour operators offer safaris lasting around 6 to 7 days. This is considered a standard route for northern Tanzania.

During this time, travelers usually visit several of the best-known national parks, including:

A cultural experience, such as a visit to a Maasai community, is often included as well.

These shorter safaris are ideal for travelers with limited time or for those who want to combine their safari with a beach holiday in Zanzibar.

However, there is one disadvantage: the itinerary is usually quite tight.

Why 10 days on safari are much better

If you have enough time, I recommend spending at least 10 days on safari.

The main reason is that distances in Tanzania are often underestimated.

The Serengeti ecosystem alone covers around 30,000 square kilometers. The Serengeti National Park itself covers approximately 14,750 square kilometers.

With more time, you can:

  • explore different regions of the Serengeti

  • enjoy more wildlife encounters

  • spend longer days on game drives

  • simply stop and observe without constantly watching the clock

A safari is not about speed. It is about patience.

14 days on safari: the ideal duration

For many travelers, two weeks is the ideal length for a safari – and I say that from personal experience.

Why?

Because you have enough time to really immerse yourself in nature.

With 14 days, you have time for:

  • several days in the Serengeti

  • a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater

  • safari experiences in Tarangire National Park

  • perhaps even the less-visited Lake Manyara National Park – or Mkomazi National Park

You also have more flexibility for:

  • additional game drives

  • exploring different regions of the Serengeti

  • more relaxed travel days between lodges

Travel times between the national parks

Even though many of the parks in northern Tanzania are relatively close to each other, transfers can still take several hours.

There are several reasons for this:

  • speed limits for safari vehicles

  • unpaved roads

  • stops for wildlife sightings

The journey from the Ngorongoro area to central Serengeti alone can take around 4–5 hours, depending on the route and conditions.

That is why a short safari can feel more rushed than many travelers expect.

National park opening hours

Another important factor when planning your safari is the opening hours of the parks.

In Serengeti National Park:

  • game drives are generally permitted between sunrise and 18:00

  • vehicles must leave the park or return to their designated accommodation by the evening closing time

Other parks, such as Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park, also have set opening and closing times.

This means that your actual time for wildlife viewing each day is limited – another reason why spending several days on safari makes sense.

Is a short visit to the Serengeti worth it?

Technically, you can visit the Serengeti for a very short time.

Some travelers enter the park in the morning, spend one night and leave again the following day.

But honestly, it can feel a little like this:

You get an incredibly delicious ice cream, take one lick – and then someone immediately takes it away again.

The Serengeti reveals its magic when you give it time.

After several days, you begin to:

  • understand animal movements

  • discover different landscapes

  • truly appreciate the peace and vastness of the wilderness

So, how many days on safari are ideal?

In summary:

  • 6–7 days: a classic short safari

  • 10 days: more relaxed and more immersive

  • 14 days: ideal for a comprehensive safari experience

If your budget and time allow, it is worth adding a few extra days.

A safari is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in the world – and it would be a shame to rush through it.
