Silale Swamp – Why this part of Tarangire National Park is my personal favourite
Most visitors explore Tarangire National Park along the Tarangire River and leave the park again in the afternoon. Only a few continue into the northern part of the national park to Silale Swamp. For me, however, this vast wetland and grassland area is one of the most beautiful parts of Tarangire. Those who make the extra drive are rewarded with a completely different side of Tarangire – with impressive wildlife sightings and far fewer vehicles.

Why I always plan two days in Tarangire
Many safaris spend only one day in Tarangire National Park. For me, that would no longer be enough. The reason is Silale Swamp.
It takes around two hours to reach the swamp from the park entrance. Many visitors turn back before getting there or leave the park earlier. That is exactly why this part of Tarangire is much quieter and visited by comparatively few vehicles.
When we reached the northern part of the national park, the landscape suddenly opened up. On the right was the typical Tarangire savanna, while the vast Silale Swamp stretched out on the left. At that moment at the latest, I knew the long drive had been worth it. Since then, a second day in Tarangire has simply been part of my safari plans.
What is Silale Swamp?
Silale Swamp is located in the northern part of Tarangire National Park and can only be reached after a longer drive from the main entrance. This is exactly why many day visitors never see this area.
During the dry season, Silale Swamp is one of the most important wetland areas in Tarangire National Park. Although large parts of the landscape dry out, many animals can still find water and fresh grass here. This makes the swamp one of the best places for wildlife viewing in Tarangire.
Elephants, buffalo and many other animals
Especially during the dry season, numerous animals gather around Silale Swamp. The large elephant herds that regularly come to the water are particularly impressive. You can often watch them drinking, bathing or moving together through the wetlands.
Besides elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, warthogs and various antelope species are also frequently seen here. With a little luck, lions may appear as well, using the open areas for hunting.
Birdwatchers will also find plenty to enjoy. Herons, storks, ibises and many other bird species can regularly be spotted around the wetlands.
A paradise for photographers
I love photographing animals in their natural surroundings – and that is exactly what makes Silale Swamp so special to me. The vast landscape feels peaceful and untouched. Instead of taking only close-up shots, you can capture animals within their surroundings – and these are exactly the kind of images I personally like best.
My tip
When someone asks me today why I recommend spending two days in Tarangire National Park, my answer is clear: because of Silale Swamp. In my opinion, the extra driving time is absolutely worth it. The impressive landscape, large elephant herds and peaceful atmosphere make this part of Tarangire a very special experience.
On my next visit, Silale Swamp will definitely be on my itinerary again.
