Day trips from Arusha and Moshi – The best activities before or after your safari
Many travellers visit Arusha or Moshi as a starting point for a safari in northern Tanzania. Most safari tours to famous national parks such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park begin from here.
But the region around Arusha and Moshi has much more to offer. If you have one or two days before or after your safari, it is well worth exploring some of the region’s most beautiful natural and cultural experiences.
From waterfalls and hot springs to hiking on Mount Kilimanjaro – these day trips around Arusha and Moshi are perfect additions to your Tanzania adventure.

Lake Duluti – Crater lake near Arusha
The idyllic Lake Duluti is only about 20 minutes from Arusha and is a popular destination for a relaxing day trip.
The small crater lake is surrounded by dense forest and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here you can:
take a canoe trip on the lake
spot numerous bird species
walk around the lake
The atmosphere is particularly beautiful in the morning or around sunset.
Napuru Waterfalls – Nature and local villages
Napuru Waterfalls are among the lesser-known waterfalls around Arusha and are therefore a real hidden gem.
After a short hike through small villages and green landscapes, you reach the waterfalls, which cascade down several levels. The walk also gives you an authentic glimpse into everyday life in the local communities.
Materuni Waterfalls – Waterfall and coffee experience
The impressive Materuni Waterfalls are located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro near Moshi.
The hike to the waterfall takes you through tropical vegetation, banana plantations and small villages of the Chagga people. The waterfall drops about 80 metres into a natural pool – perfect for a refreshing break.
Many tours combine the visit with a traditional coffee experience, where you can learn how coffee is grown, roasted and prepared.
Not every traveller wants to climb Mount Kilimanjaro all the way to the summit – but a day hike on Africa’s highest mountain is still possible.
Inside Kilimanjaro National Park, a popular route leads to Mandara Hut at an altitude of around 2,700 metres.
The hike takes you through dense rainforest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and numerous bird species. The entire excursion takes around 6–8 hours and offers a wonderful introduction to the natural world of Kilimanjaro.
Chemka Hot Springs – Turquoise oasis and diving experience
The Kikuletwa Hot Springs, often called Chemka Hot Springs, are among the most beautiful natural swimming spots in northern Tanzania.
In the middle of a dry savannah landscape lies a small oasis with crystal-clear, turquoise water. Large fig trees provide shade, while the warm spring water is perfect for swimming and relaxing.
Since January 2026, diving has also been possible here – a unique experience in this tropical setting. Divers can explore the underwater world of the spring pool and discover its clear blue depths up close.
Chemka Hot Springs are therefore not only a perfect place to swim, float and relax, but also offer an exciting day out for adventurous travellers. They are ideal for a day trip from either Moshi or Arusha.
At 4,566 metres, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and is located within Arusha National Park.
Even without attempting a multi-day climb, the area is well worth visiting. On a day hike, you can:
explore tropical forests
see giraffes and buffalo
enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro
Many visitors start their hike at Meru Eco Camp.
Arusha Giraffe Center – Get close to giraffes
The Arusha Giraffe Center is a lovely destination for wildlife lovers and families. Here you can observe giraffes up close and learn more about the conservation of these fascinating animals.
A visit can easily be combined with other activities around Arusha.
Mailisita Paradise Waterfalls – A hidden natural gem
The Mailisita Paradise Waterfalls are one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the region.
The route takes you through green valleys and small communities. The waterfall is located in a peaceful setting and is perfect for travellers who want to get off the typical tourist routes.
I’ll be able to tell you more about this waterfall in August 2026, as it is on my activity list for then. But one thing is already certain: you should be sure-footed!
German Boma – Arusha’s colonial history
The historic German Boma is one of the oldest buildings in the city and dates back to the German colonial period in the early 20th century.
Today, it houses a museum offering insights into the history of Arusha and the development of the region.
Arusha – The safari capital of northern Tanzania
Arusha lies at the foot of Mount Meru and is considered the safari hub of northern Tanzania.
Most safaris to the country’s famous national parks start from here. At the same time, Arusha is a lively city with markets, cafés, art galleries and local restaurants.
The Maasai Market Curios and Crafts is particularly popular, where you can find traditional handicrafts, jewellery and souvenirs.
