Where the day slowly comes to an end in Arusha – sundowners with a view

Many travellers arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon or set off on their safari the following morning. Yet it is well worth taking the time to enjoy that first or last evening. With a refreshing drink in hand and views of majestic Mount Meru – and, if you are lucky, even Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

My personal recommendations for a perfect sundowner

Over the past few years, I have discovered several places around Arusha where I particularly enjoy watching the day come to an end. Some are surrounded by nature, while others offer cosy terraces with views of the mountains. Each has its own special charm, and that is exactly why I want to share them with you.

Kilima Punda – sunset over Arusha

If I could recommend just one place, this would be it. The short sunset trip to Kilima Punda offers wonderful views over Arusha and Mount Meru. Just before sunset, the warm light bathes the landscape in golden colours. The cover photo for this article was taken right here.

The Peaks Lounge – sundowners with mountain views

The Peaks Lounge is one of my favourite places for a relaxing evening. From here, you have a direct view of Mount Meru. Admittedly, the mountain is often hidden behind clouds. But when it does appear, the view is simply stunning.

The Panorama Arusha – still on my list

So far, I only know this place from recommendations and photographs. The views are said to be fantastic, which is why The Panorama is high on my list for my next stay in Arusha. As soon as I have visited, I will update this article.

Shose Farm House – a little detour to Moshi

Although Shose Farm House is in Moshi rather than Arusha, I still want to mention it. The gardens are beautiful, the food is excellent, and on clear days you can see all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro. For me, it is one of the loveliest places to unwind at the end of a day of travelling.

Napuru Waterfall and Themi Falls Leisure Park

After visiting Napuru Waterfall, I enjoy stopping at Themi Falls Leisure Park. Surrounded by greenery, it is a lovely place to end the day with good food and a refreshing drink. If you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Meru.

African Tulip and Mount Meru Hotel

If you prefer to stay right in Arusha, there are some lovely options for a relaxing evening here, too. Both the African Tulip and the Mount Meru Hotel have pleasant terraces where you can enjoy the first or last evening of your trip to Tanzania.

Why an evening in Arusha is worth your time

For many travellers, Arusha is simply the starting point for a safari or the final stop before flying home. But it is worth making time for a relaxing evening. Whether you choose a viewpoint, a restaurant or a spot surrounded by greenery, enjoying a sundowner with views of Mount Meru is, in my opinion, an essential part of any trip.

And who knows? Perhaps Mount Kilimanjaro will make an appearance that evening, too. It is these little, unexpected moments that make Tanzania so special to me, time and time again.
